Finding Home exhibition

  • Modal 845 New North Road Mt Albert (map)

An exhibition by visual artist Adrienne Wong

“I’m interested in our connection to locations. After recently returning to NZ following decades of living in different countries – all the time maintaining a strong identity as a Kiwi and an undercurrent of longing for my hometown of Auckland – I ask: is this home? My feelings of unfamiliarity with the physical and social landscape coupled with feelings of connection to places overseas, along with experiences of racism, have led me to question: is this the home I knew?

Locations hold memories and meaning. In my paintings and drawings, these locations are devoid of the usual visual cues, suggesting memory and movement within fields of spatial ambiguity. My process incorporates the selective recall of my memories and the emotions deriving from my experiences with people and places.

My intention is to communicate those observations and emotions, and to transport the viewer to another world, evoking a dreamlike uncertainty.”

Adrienne studied visual arts at the University of the Arts London, and her art has been selected for international exhibitions including The Hunting Art Prize, The Lawndale Big Show and The Celeste Art Prize UK. Much of her career has been in advertising and design, having worked as an art director and visual designer in Houston, Johannesburg, Sydney and Auckland. She also happens to be the executive director of Ockham Residential’s Brand & Communications.
