Ockham Collective presents Carnivorous Plant Society at Freida Margolis

  • Freida Margolis 440 Richmond Rd Grey Lynn (map)

For the fifth installment in our curated salon series at Freida Margolis bar in Grey Lynn, the Ockham Collective presents Carnivorous Plant Society. Let New Zealand's favourite psychedelic jazz band take you on a journey from the streets of Mexico City to the mountains of Asia then straight to the depths of hell.

The band is lead by Finn Scholes, who happens to be New Zealand's best trumpet player (and who also plays tuba, vibraphone, piano and organ). Finn will be joined by his polymath-musician mate, Michael Barker, who was until recently one of Melbourne's top session drummers and percussionists. While there he played with Tim Finn and Neil Finn, before touring the world for half a decade as part of John Butler Trio.

The duo will be joined by Eric Scholes  - one of New Zealand's top bass players. He studied classical double bass at Baltimore University and has performed several concertos.

“What Carnivorous Plant Society do do is provide ear blistering entertainment, imaginative funk, touches of world music, prog rock, spaghetti western mariachi moments, and just about anything that’s fun and fast and furious, including yes, jazz and traces of trippy tones, spacey but not spaced out. They’re amazingly multi-talented musicians weaving infectious songs with impeccable timing.” Otago Daily Times  15 April 2021
