The Unsung Heroes

  • Grey Lynn Library Hall 474 Great North Road Grey Lynn (map)

Join an evening of new songs about Old Auckland and NZ, with stories, music, and historic images projected on the big screen.

Enjoy an introduction with slides by Peter Elliott who will be reading from the writings of famous visitors talking about Auckland: Robert Louis Stevenson, George Bernard Shaw, Arthur Conon Doyle, Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling and more.

Then settle in for an evening of songs about colourful Auckland characters, such as the Ponsonby-born balloonist Captain Lorraine whose balloon was tragically blown out to sea in 1898. Then there’s Bobby Leach, the first man to conquer Niagara Falls in a barrel who later died after slipping on an orange peel in Onehunga.

Presented by Chris Priestley and Peter Elliott, with Cameron Bennett, Nigel Gavin and Sonia Wilson.
