"Ockham Collective presents..."
Live music! At the Ockham Collective, we're obsessed with it – and we're aware that we're extraordinarily privileged in this country to still be able to enjoy it when so much of the world can't. It's been a tough 12 months for both musicians and venues, which is part of the reason we're working with Freida Margolis bar in Grey Lynn to put together a very special salon series showcasing top-notch artists in wonderfully intimate surroundings.
"We're really pleased to be able to provide support to Mike Howie and the folks from Freida Margolis to curate a monthly concert in an intimate setting. It provides us all an opportunity to celebrate the artistic talent right here in Tāmaki Makaurau,” says Ockham director Benjamin Preston.
We kicked this series off last month with a set by the extraordinary Reb Fountain. Despite the lack of fanfare, tickets sold out almost immediately. Those lucky enough to snatch them up were treated to one of those very special performances that will remain etched in the memory for years to come (click here for a very short snippet).
Next up, on Saturday 10 April, we're excited to host Mireya Ramos and her band for a night of 'Latin mariachi soul'. Mireya (pictured) won a Latin Grammy in 2017 with her all-female mariachi band La Flor de Toloache, and their latest album Indestructible was nominated for the Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album category in the main 2020 Grammy Awards. She's also recorded with John Legend and Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. This performance is one of those rare COVID silver linings: Mireya came for WOMAD 2020, which took place just before last March's lockdown, and decided to ride out the pandemic in Aotearoa.
The evening will feature Mireya on vocals and violin, backed by a four-piece band.
