Ben Fernandez is a classically trained jazz pianist, composer and arranger. He has a Masters Degree in Music majoring in jazz performance from the University of Auckland. His research for the Masters programme was based on the use of elements of Indian classical music in jazz improvisation. He also has degrees in physics, computer science and business management.
Ben gave up a successful business career to make music a full-time career choice. Since then he has performed at shows and events in over 25 countries including the Cannes Film Festival, the Publishers Ball in Hong Kong, New Years Celebrations at the World Trade Centre in Dubai, a party for President Bill Clinton in Mumbai, a Microsoft conference in Sri Lanka, the Afro-Asian Games Closing Ceremony in Hyderabad and a post-match party for the All Blacks in Auckland.
Ben and his band have performed at many jazz and music festivals in Australasia. He is the pianist on call for events, functions and ceremonies hosted by the Governor General of New Zealand.
Ben also composes music for advertising jingles, film soundtracks, corporate films and TV shows. He has played for many musicals and theatre productions. A jingle he produced for Star Movies won Gold at the Pro-Max A/V Awards in Singapore. His composition Summit – commissioned to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Sir Edmund Hillary – was performed in concerts in Auckland and Wellington in October 2020.
With Pauline Grogan, Ben co-wrote a book entitled Songs of Life which was adapted for theatre and performed at the Pumphouse on Auckland's North Shore. He has just finished composing music for a new rock musical, Scream, that is due to be staged later this year.
