Aotearoa’s most important writer Witi Ihimaera takes to the stage as part of the Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival, showcasing his contemporary interpretations of pūrakau from his new book, Navigating the Stars: Māori Creation Myths. Floating Islands riffs through his memoirs and the journey travelled with whānau, with an ocean of sound created by musical polymath and Ockham Collective resident Kingsley Spargo, and keyboard virtuoso Alan Brown (otherwise known as Alargo). The vocal strains of renowned singer and actress Mere Boynton tether these elements, optimising the volatile dynamic between the abstract and the familiar, to create a unique and spellbinding evening. Directed by Kim Meredith and Kingsley Melhuish.
