Uptown has a great history of music; with The Powerstation, Bungalow Bills and Roundhead Studios being just some of the music spaces that help make Uptown the awesome creative community that it is. This very first ‘Local Voices’ event is a showcase of some of Uptown’s spectacular local musicians.
Performing live on the night:
ALÍCÍA
Fresh on the scene and out to get you in the groove, Alícía is one to watch. Hot off the stage at the 2021 Tauranga Jazz Festival and Hamilton's Festival One, you can expect R&B, Jazz and Hip-hop influenced beats overlaid with rich vocals. She’ll be performing with her tight 4-piece band.
THE FURR COATS
With inspiration for their bluesy indie-rock sound, coming from their tales of student life living on the Terrace in Wellington, The Furr Coats are a five-piece band hailing from Mount Eden, Auckland. They practice on the border of Uptown, preparing for an increasing amount of live shows and a debut EP set to be released in a couple months.
KINGSLEY SPARGO
Kingsley Spargo is renowned for leaving audiences mesmerised with music that pulls at the heart. His experience as a jazz musician enables him to transcend genres in ways few musicians can. The soulful trumpeter has wowed audiences alongside luminaries such as Don McGlashan, Tim Finn, Violent Femmes, SJD, and more recently with the inimitable Witi Ihimaera. But the multi-instrumentalist is also known for working across theatre and free improvised music in his collaborations with poet Courtney Sina Meredith, dance company Black Grace (Guerilla Collection), composer Eve de Castro Robinson, and his performances can even be heard on the Dalai Lama’s album Inner World. RNZ reviewer William Dart describes his 2019 album Chasing Spirits as ‘a bit like a trip to an all-star cocktail lounge’. Recent compositions include narratives around yearning and the geometry of life, and these beautifully crafted songs draw on his life in Aotearoa New Zealand and abroad.
MONTGOMERY
Montgomery is an emerging talent, with a new wave sound centered around his love for alt-rock. The underlying vulnerability of his songs is accented through his alternative, guitar driven sound. He experiments with confronting topics about himself and those around him in an honest and sincere way. With the success of his debut single Wasteland he is preparing for his next upcoming releases.
As this is being held on licenced premises, this is an R18 event.
