November at the OC
Our November offerings include a TV drama, an art exhibition and lashings of music.
After the Party
Sunday 29 October saw the launch of TVNZ's new six-part miniseries After the Party, starring Robyn Malcolm (pictured) in what may be one of her best roles yet. James Croot in the Sunday Star Times described it as "a solid gripping drama, worthy of your time".
And the Ockham Collective connection? It's co-produced by Luminous Beast, Dan Musgrove's production company. And Dan, as I can't seem to stop repeating, is our resident Emmy winner. If you missed it, catch up on the first episode on TVNZ+ or look out for the next episodes on TVNZ 1 at 8.30pm, Sundays.
Anton Ren exhibition
On Friday 3 November we welcomed a new art exhibition to our space at The Nix. Hosted by the Collective's Paul Woodruffe, it's an exhibition of works on paper by one of his former students, Anton Ren (see the image in the calendar below). It's running until 24 November, so you'll get to see it if you're attending any events at The Nix this month.
Music Music Music
November's musical moments start with Ben Fernandez's jazz band Impressions performing at Devonport RSA on the afternoon of Sunday 5 November. They'll be playing a selection of tunes from the American songbook, along with some Celtic, French and Latin numbers.
Next up, the intriguingly named Railway Pie is the guest artist at the Auckland Bluegrass Club on Wednesday 8 November at The Nix. They're described as 'masters of jug band music whose members are dedicated to keeping the old blues traditions alive'. It kicks off at 7.30pm and tickets are $10 on the door.
Then, on Friday 17 November, Jessie Leov will be hosting her second Women About Sound songwriter showcase at The Nix. She'll be performing as part of AVA & LEOV alongside other emerging talent from across Tāmaki Makaurau, including Ms Mia, Baby J and ABBIE. Watch the Women About Sound Facebook page for ticket details. Showtime is 8pm and door sales will be available.
But that's not the only news from Jessie this month. It has recently been announced that she has been selected as the NZSO National Youth Orchestra Composer-in-Residence for 2024. Congratulations Jessie!
Saturday 18 November sees the return of Louise Evans' popular Pop-Up Folk Club to The Nix. The artists this time around are Marika Chia & Adam Ogle, Ang Kidd, and Ollie Bramah & Caitlin Ryan. It starts at 5pm and tickets are available on the door (adult/student/kid $15/10/5). Louise will also be hosting her fortnightly Tuesday Irish Sessions at The Nix on the 14th and 28th of November (all welcome).
We want you for the 2024 Ockham Collective!
We've extended the deadline for applications for next year's Ockham Collective until 17 November. All of the information is here. If you would like to be considered for the Ockham Collective in 2024, contact OC director Peter Dragicevich. There's no form to fill in or anything like that. Simply let us know a little about yourself and what kind of projects you'd like to bring to our spaces.
