June Calendar
We’re preparing to sail towards Matariki with The Tīwhas, a Māori drag troupe performing with a live band including the Ockham Collective's Tom Knowles. They're playing at the Wintergarden at the Civic Theatre as part of the Auckland Live Cabaret Festival this coming Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (4 to 6 June). Following that they're off to Wellington for a season at Circa Theatre.
It seems that a lot of you like to chill out on Friday evenings. Rachel Fuller's first Classical Chill-out Session was so well received that she's bringing it back, with the Nix booked for Friday 6 June and Friday 13 June. The formula remains the same: "Bring a cushion, grab a bean bag, find a comfy spot and relax to the sounds of beautiful music played by superb musicians." On the 6th you'll hear a beautiful programme of Art Songs written by women composers, performed by soprano Holly Evans and pianist Jun Castelblanco-Zheng. It's the aural equivalent of a bath bomb and glass of chardonnay. Koha is appreciated.
After you've wound down on the Friday, kick off Saturday 14 June with our first Pop Up Folk Club of the year. This is a late afternoon/early evening session, making it equally suitable for families, early-to-bed types and those planning to party the night away on K' Rd afterwards. The doors open at 4.45pm, the music starts at 5pm and it's all over by 8pm. Tickets are $20 on the door by cash or bank transfer ($15 students, $10 teens, 12 and under FREE). Also this month, three of our OC alumni – Sonia Wilson, Nigel Gavin and Ben Fernandez – are joining forces for a gig at Ipress Cafe in Mt Eden Village on the afternoon of Sunday 15 June. Tickets are $25 on the door or $20 plus booking fee on eventfinda.
