Fiction Fundamentals
Fiction Fundamentals is a craft-intensive, ten-week, evening course designed for aspiring novelists and story writers which will run at The Nix from 23 July to 20 September.
It's part of a new Craft Fundamentals series devised by Ockham Collective member Paula Morris (pictured), an award-winning fiction writer and essayist, and director of the Master of Creative Writing programme at the University of Auckland.
The first five weeks are built around seminars on: point of view, narrative structure, character, setting and dialogue. Each seminar includes craft lessons, readings of excerpts from published work, and writing exercises. The final five weeks will focus on workshops of student work – novel chapters or short stories.
Fiction Fundamentals will be taught by experienced tutor Ruby Porter, author of the award-winning novel Attraction and a graduate of the MCW, with teaching guest Sonya Wilson – also an MCW graduate and author of the award-winning YA novel Spark Hunter. Paula Morris will teach the introductory seminar on narrative structure.
The first class is on a Sunday afternoon with the following nine classes on Wednesday evenings. For prices and registration, visit eventbrite, or contact the organisers with any queries.
